The object is to provide a seal which, in addition to sealing off the volume to be enclosed, also guarantees reliable separation of parts of the sealing system in which different sealing media which must not come into contact have been used. In the region of the contact zone between the grooves (3, 4) carrying different sealing media, one of the two grooves (3) is widened to a, preferably cylindrical, cavity (5), and the mouth (6) of this groove (3) is comprehensively sealed by means of a rubber pad (8) which is pressed on by means of a ram (9). The second groove (4) opens into the cavity (5) in the vicinity of the side opposite the mouth (6) of the first-mentioned groove (3). As a further development, the invention can also, and in particular, be used with advantage in contact zones between more than two sealing media. Sealing systems of the type described are found, for example, in the casings of hydrogen-cooled turbo generators, which are generally sealed, inter alia, with a viscoelastic composition and oil, where contact between the sealing media mentioned must be prevented. <IMAGE>
