SOLUTION: An accelerator openingθa, a rotational speed of an engine Ne, a water temperature Tw and the like are inputted (S1), and either a stratified combustion or a homogeneous combustion is selected based on these data (S2), and whether a combustion-changing is required or not is judged (S3), and when the changing is not required, whether a stratified combustion is now under way or not at present is judged (S4), and when a stratified combustion is under way, a target EGR ratio tEGRs corresponding to the stratified combustion is established (S5), and when a homogeneous combustion is under way, a target EGR ratio tEGRh corresponding to the homogeneous combustion is established.
