PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a capacitor discharge type ignitor for an internal combustion engine having the function of detecting an ion current flowing through ignition plugs, preventing the shortage of charge of a capacitor which applies bias voltage to the ignition plugs. SOLUTION: A bias capacitor C1 which applies the bias voltage to both ignition plugs for the ion current to flow through the ignition plugs 4A, 4B is connected at one end to a positive polarity side output terminal 2A2 of an ignition power supply part 2A which charges an ignition capacitor Ca, through a backflow preventing diode D1, and the bias capacitor C1 is charged by the output of the ignition power supply part 2A. A control part 2B is provided for controlling the ignition power supply part so that the ignition power supply part 2A prohibits the output of DC voltage for charging the ignition capacitor Ca during a time from igniting the internal combustion engine to completing the detection of the ion current.
