PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To shorten the time required for moving a transfer member to bring it into contact with and separate it from an image carrier and to suppress the occurrence of vibrations when moving the transfer member, in an image forming apparatus wherein a recording medium is led between the image carrier holding a toner image and the transfer member provided so as to be able to come into contact with and separate from the image carrier and the toner image held on the image carrier is transferred to the recording medium by the transfer member. SOLUTION: In the image forming apparatus wherein a recording medium 6 is led between image carriers 1 and 5 holding toner images and a transfer member 7 provided so as to be able to come into contact with and separate from the image carriers and the toner images held on the image carriers are transferred to the recording medium by the transfer member, distances by which the transfer member is separated from the image carriers can be changed.
