Nitrogen-containing photocatalyst based on titanium dioxide, e.g. useful in coatings, plastics, fibers and paper

Nitrogen-containing photocatalyst based on titanium dioxide has significant light absorption at wavelengths of at least 400 nm compared with pure titanium dioxide, has a strong absorbtion band at a binding energy of 399.1 eV in its x-ray photoelectron spectrum relative to the O1s band at 530 eV, and has an azo bond vibration at 1329 cm->1> in its infrared spectrum. Independent claims are also included for: (1) producing a nitrogen-containing titanium dioxide that is photoactive in visible light by mixing a titanium compound having a BET surface area of at least 50 m2>/g with a nitrogen compound and heat-treating the mixture at up to 400[deg] C; (2) depositing a photocatalyst as above as a thin film on a compact or porous support material, e.g. glass, wood, fibers, ceramic, concrete, building material, silica, metal, natural or suynthetic fabric, paper or plastic.
