Disclosed is a method for chemical cleaning of a membrane filter (1) which is immersed in a tank (2) with a fluid (3) to be filtered, and which comprises a housing (4) in which membranes (5) are located and which has upper and lower openings (6) for the through-flow of the fluid (3) during a filtering operation, wherein a cleaning procedure is carried out comprising at least one cleaning step in which a cleaning fluid (19a, b, c) is supplied into the top of the housing (4) to the membrane filter (1) and thereby displaces the fluid (3) located therein so far downwards that the membranes (5) are surrounded by the cleaning fluid (19a, b, c), the membranes (5) are cleaned during a contact period with the cleaning fluid (19a, b, c), and subsequently the cleaning fluid (19a, b, c) is discharged from the membrane filter (1), wherein, before the cleaning procedure begins, the fluid level (7) in the tank (2) is lowered, so that during the cleaning procedure the top of the housing (4) projects above a fluid level (7) of the fluid (3) in the tank (2), while the membranes (5) remain, at least mostly, underneath the fluid level (7), and the fluid level (7) is raised again after completion of the cleaning procedure.
