PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject new compound having a wide liquid crystal temperature region and useful for practical use of a ferroelectric liquid crystal element as a constituting component of a liquid crystal composition. SOLUTION: This compound is expressed by the formula Y1 is a single bond or O; Y2 is a single bond, etc.; R1 and R2 are each a (substituted 2-24C alkyl, etc.; X is H or a halogen; (i) is 0 or 1}, e.g. (s)-2-hydroxy-6-(2'- methylbutyloxy)naphthalene. The compound of the formula is obtained by condensing a compound of formula II with a compound of formula III in the presence of a dehydration condensing agent such as N,N'-dicyclohexylcarbodiimide(DCC) and a catalyst (e.g. 4-pyrolidinopyridine). The compound is added to a liquid crystal composition to improve a response time, orientation and a contrast ratio, etc. |
