A double cannula assembly for medical or veterinary use includes a first cannula (10) for insertion into a blood vessel in a conventional manner. This first cannula is an outer cannula and a second or inner cannula (12) is subsequently inserted through said first cannula to extend beyond the distal tip of the outer cannula. The inner cannula and outer cannulae are formed to prevent blood entering between the engaging surfaces.
