PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a calender which gives a highly good calender finish and simultaneously lowers a cost needed to the operation. SOLUTION: This calender 1 for treating a paper web 12 has at least one roll stack which can be installed from an end portion and has an upper end roll 3, a lower end roll 4, and a plurality of middle rolls 5, 6, 7. The upper end roll 3, the lower end roll 4, and the middle rolls 5, 6, 7 are cooperated and disposed within the planes of the roll stack 2. In order to form operation nips in the forms of soft nips 8, 9, 10, 11, the upper end roll 3 and the lower end roll 4 are formed in the forms of soft rolls, and the middle rolls 5, 6, 7 are formed as a hard rolls 5, 7 and a soft roll 6. The diameter of the soft roll for forming the middle roll 6 is larger than those of the soft rolls for forming the upper end roll 3 and the lower end roll 4.
