An automatic transmission in which smooth operation of a range change device is maintained over a long period. The automatic transmission (60) has the range change device (1) including a housing (10) having an opening (70) in one side, a motor (4) rotated by a signal from a shift lever, and a mechanical transmission mechanism (51) for transmitting rotation of the motor (4) to a manual valve, and also has a case (62) for receiving a shift mechanism. The drive range of the shift mechanism received in the case (62) by the range change device (1) can be changed by the range change device (1) according to the position to which the manual valve is shifted. The case (62) has a joining part (62a) for closing the opening (70) of the housing (10).
