PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a color display device and method that can reduce power consumption, and also reduce color-breaking and disturbance thereof. SOLUTION: The intensity of a light source that does not increase power consumption is calculated from the maximum luminance value of an image signal wherein three primary color signals contained in an input color image signal are input, and from the maximum luminance value of each field and the component ratio constituting the fourth color component obtained such that the input image is decomposed into fields of three primary colors and the fourth color component consisting of combination of two colors or more among these three primary colors in a decomposed image generation unit 3, while distributing more luminance to the fourth color component as much as possible. Among the determined light source intensity, the light source intensity of the fourth color component is compared with the luminance of the fourth color component. When not covered in the range that can be expressed by the field of the fourth color component, a decomposed image-updating unit 6 updates display luminance for compensating the difference by each field of R, G, B.
