PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a composite photodiode device wherein a photodiode capable of receiving a high-speed optical signal, and a high sensitivity and low response speed photodiode capable of detecting the mean output thereof or the existence of the high speed signal are combined. SOLUTION: The device includes a small photodiode having a small light-receiving surface with a small dimension to receive the high-speed optical signal, and a large photodiode having a large light-receiving portion with a large dimension to detect the mean intensity of the signal. Respective cathode and anode electrodes are independently insulated, and the optical signal is made incident on both of the large photodiode and the small photodiode so that each of them can receive it.
