A method of treating a surface of a metal particle and a metal particle are provided to achieve a protective layer having a thickness determined by processing temperature, the amount of supplied processing gas, and processing time. A method of treating a surface of a metal particle comprises the steps of preparing a metal oxide particle(1) and forming a protective layer(21) including at least one of metal sulfur oxide and metal carbonate on the surface of the metal oxide particle. The metal oxide particle includes one selected from the group consisting of a calcium oxide particle, a calcium magnesium oxide particle, a sodium oxide particle and a potassium oxide particle. In the step of forming the protective layer, metal hydroxide is formed on the surface of the metal oxide particle, and carbon dioxide is applied to the metal hydroxide. The metal oxide particle contains calcium oxide.
