An image processing device, an image processing method and a program are provided to allow a user to select an image with high preference with respect to each subject from one or more images. A face image extracting unit(112) specifies a face region of a subject and extracts a face image corresponding to the face region with respect to each select target image. A preference calculating unit(116) calculates preference of the subject by using the face image. A select image updating unit(118) selects an image corresponding to a face image with the highest preference, among preferences calculated by the preference calculating unit, as a select candidate image. An image selecting unit selects the select candidate image of each subject selected by the select image updating unit as a select image of each subject. The preference is calculated based on one of the size of the face image, a look of the subject, the direction of the face of the subject, the direction of the subject's eyes, presence or absence of detection of the eyes and mouth of the subject, saturation of the face image, one of space frequencies of the face image, and their combination.
