A timing system protection apparatus is provided to prevent damage of a timing system according to disconnection of a timing chain by stopping previously an operation of an engine according to an allowable elongation ratio. A timing system protection system is provided to an automatic chain tensioner(10), an elongation ratio detection unit(20), and an engine control unit(30). The automatic chain tensioner adds power to a timing chain in order to maintain constantly the tension of the timing chain. The elongation ratio detection unit senses a length change of a stroke of the automatic chain tensioner. The elongation ratio detection unit outputs a voltage value corresponding to the length change of the stroke of the automatic chain tensioner. The engine control unit stops selectively an operation of an engine according to an output voltage of the elongation ratio detection unit.
