PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a phyllosilicate raw material that is secure and safe and has excellent sliding friction characteristics and to provide a method for producing the phyllosilicate raw material.SOLUTION: A titanate compound includes 60% or more, based on the number of particles, of particles having a specific surface area of 10 to 30 m/g as measured by the nitrogen adsorption BET one-point method, an anisotropic shape and a major axis diameter L in the range of 0.1<L≤0.9 μm as measured by an electron microscopy. A method for producing the titanate compound comprises a step of pulverizing an alkali metal titanate compound until the specific surface area attains 10 m/g or more, a step of annealing the resultant pulverized product and then a step of bringing the alkali metal titanate compound into contact with an acidic aqueous solution to substitute at least a part of alkali metal cations in the alkali metal titanate compound with protons and preferably comprises a step of heating the proton-substituted titanate compound. The particle includes a crystal of 2:1 type phyllosilicate having a basic structure in which an octahedral sheet is sandwiched between two tetrahedral sheets and being represented by formula (1) as given below. The particle is a flaky crystal having a ratio (minor axis/major axis) of an average minor axis to an average major axis on a crystal (a, b) surface of 0.3 to 0.8, an average thickness in a c-axial direction of the crystal of 10 to 300 nm and an average aspect ratio of 20 to 50.
