PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a device and a method for a sounding test for readily and promptly obtaining a characteristic value for obtaining liquefaction strength and dynamic modulus of deformation of a ground by repeatedly performing a horizontal direction loading test at an original position.SOLUTION: A sounding test method investigates a soil layer property in a depth direction by measuring resistance at a measurement depth by connecting a hollow resisting body having a cutting shoe to a tip part of a rod and penetrating it into the ground. The hollow resisting body is of an elliptical shape having a major axial diameter greater than a diameter of the cutting shoe and a minor axial diameter equal to or smaller than the diameter of the cutting shoe, and is provided with a loading unit inclined at 5 degrees or less in a penetration direction connecting apexes on the major axis. A horizontal-direction loading test is performed repeatedly while penetrating the hollow resisting body into the ground or while penetrating and rotating the hollow resisting body, for obtaining a dynamic characteristic value of the ground by measuring rotary resistive torque generated on the loading unit.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 1
