PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a resol type phenolic resin for a friction material capable of achieving a high adhesive strength in a short adhesion time, and to provide a method for producing the same.SOLUTION: A resol resin which is a resol type phenolic resin used in a friction material has a structural unit A that is modified by dimethylphenols in a molecular structure and is represented by formula (1) and a phenolic resin structural unit B having a methylol group in an aromatic ring. In the formula (1), n is an integer of 1 or more; when n is 1, R is a methylol group; when n is 2 or more, R is H or a methylol group; and R contains at lest one or more structural units A being the methylol group.SELECTED DRAWING: None
