An acoustooptical device comprises, in general, a body (1) made of material capable of photoelastic interaction, means (2) for applying an acoustic wave possessing a first wavelength (Wa) to this body, in a first direction (Oa), and means (3) for applying an incident optical wave possessing a second wavelength (WLi) to this body, in a second direction (Oli). The photoelastic interaction produces at least a third optical wave emerging from the body, with the wavelength (WLe), in a third direction (Ole). According to the invention, the second wavelength (WLi) is chosen close to upper values of the optical absorption threshold of said material, whilst allowing substantial transmission of the optical wave (Oli) through the body, despite this proximity to the absorption threshold. <IMAGE>
