An electric lamp (110) includes a light-transmissive lamp envelope (112) defining an enclosed volume (114), the lamp envelope (112) having a press seal (116) at one end thereof and the press seal (116) having a recess (152) along a bottom edge (150) thereof, at least one lamp filament (124,126) disposed in the enclosed volume (114) of the lamp envelope (112), electrical leads (130-136) extending through the press seal (116) on opposite sides of the recess (152) and connected to the lamp filament (124,126), and an exhaust tube (120) extending through the recess (152) in the press seal (116) to the enclosed volume (114) of the lamp envelope (112). An insulating base (142) is typically secured to the press seal (116). The exhaust tube (120) located in the recess (152) is at least partially shielded against breakage. <IMAGE>
