PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for controlling a printer which can print to the vicinity of the lower end of printing paper while surely preventing the lack of printing from the surface of the printing paper irrespective the height of a print head and an apparatus for the method. SOLUTION: In the method and apparatus, in the lower end side area of printing data which are character data to be printed after next paper feed, in the feed direction, the head performs lower end treatment for setting a lower end masking area in an area included in a distance equal to the quantity of protrusion, in the vicinity of the lower end of the printing paper of the preceding page and, when the printed printing data with the lower end masking area set in the lower end side area are printed from the upper end side of the printable area of the printing paper of the succeeding page, upper end treatment for setting an upper end masking area in the printed area of the printing data.
