PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a focal plane shutter device reducing power consumption at the time of low speed shutter release, a bulb time use, mirror-up use, etc. SOLUTION: The focal plane shutter device 1 includes: a first shutter curtain 2; a second shutter curtain 3; a first shutter curtain drive means 4 for driving the first shutter curtain 2; a second shutter curtain drive means 5 for driving the second shutter curtain 3; and a shutter mount plate 6 having an aperture 7 made in it in order to define a photographic image plane. The first shutter curtain drive means 4 has a first shutter curtain drive motor 41, and a second shutter curtain drive means 5 has a second shutter curtain drive motor 51. At first, the first shutter curtain drive motor 41 starts and the first shutter curtain 2 runs. Subsequently, the second shutter curtain drive motor 51 starts and the second shutter curtain 3 runs.
