PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a molten metal amount detecting method and a device for an ash melting furnace enabling the accurate measurement of a molten metal amount (a molten slag amount) in the furnace by using an opening and closing plug of a tap hole in the ash melting furnace. SOLUTION: In the molten metal amount detecting method for the ash melting furnace, pressure applied to the opening and closing plug 3 is detected at the moment of carrying out tapping by easing the opening and closing plug 3 for opening and closing the tap hole 2 formed at the lower side of the ash melting furnace, or at the moment of stopping tapping by pressing the opening and closing plug against the tap hole, and a molten metal level position or the molten metal amount in the furnace is determined from the detected pressure.
