PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce HC and improve combustion stability at a time of engine cold condition. SOLUTION: When fuel is injected from a fuel injection valve 11 in an intake passage, fuel injection is divided into two times to perform first fuel injection in exhaust stroke and second fuel injection in suction stroke. Also, lift of a suction valve 5 is reduced and fuel injected in second injection and sucked in a cylinder from a suction valve 5 is made flow along a wall surface of a cylinder head side and is stratified around a spark plug 4. Since combustion stability is improved, ignition timing is delayed and exhaust gas temperature is raised to activate a catalyst at an early stage. COPYRIGHT: (C)2007,JPO&INPIT
