Method for work-hardening the surfaces (2) of vehicle engine and transmission components (3) comprises ultrasonic shot peening. The component is used as part of the sonotrode (9) and its vibrating surfaces are hardened by contact with the shot (14). Independent claims are included for: (A) apparatus for work-hardening the inner surfaces of vehicle engine and transmission components comprising a sonotrode with a cavity (10) in which the component can be mounted; and (B) apparatus for work-hardening the outer surfaces of vehicle engine and transmission components comprising a sonotrode with a sealable treatment chamber for the component.
