A magnetic thin film structure, a magnetic recording medium and a method of manufacturing the magnetic recording medium are provided to obtain a structure in which a magnetic layer having high magnetic anisotropy is formed on an v underlying layer by using transition metal nitride as the underlying layer. A magnetic thin film structure comprises: a substrate(10); an underlying layer(16) formed on the substrate of transition metal nitride; a plurality of dots(22) consisting of magnetic materials having the magnetic anisotropy on the underlying layer; and a magnetic recording layer(24) having a non-magnetic area made of the different heterogeneous materials with the magnetic materials isolating the dots. The magnetic materials forming the dots have an L1o structure.
