PURPOSE: A control method for a refrigerator is provided to determine the defrost start time actively even under abnormal environmental changes and to prevent temperature increase in the refrigerator resulting from long duration of defrosting. CONSTITUTION: A control method for a refrigerator comprises the steps of: determining whether it is necessary to perform a defrosting mode using a defrost sensor measuring the ambient temperature of an evaporator, stopping the operation of all the cooling systems if the defrosting mode is needed(S140), driving a defrost heater for transferring heat to the evaporator(S180), and determining whether defrosting has completed(S200).
