A gas burner safety device and system are disclosed. The system is for use with a gas burner, for example on a gas cooker or gas hob. A device includes a sensor which is configured to detect a surface of an item, such as pan, in proximity to the gas burner. In response to detection of the pan the device is placed in a state of readiness. Upon removal of the pan and continued detection of heat (a flame) a timer is initiated. In the event that the pan is not replaced onto the gas hob within a pre-set timer period an alert is triggered to issue an alarm or send a signal to a remote recipient who may be wearing a pendant. The sensor, which is a radiation sensor, may be configured to discriminate between heat form a gas flame and radiation reflected from a bottom surface of the saucepan. |
