NEW MATERIAL:An optically active compound expressed by formula I (R<1> is 1-15C alkyl or alkyloxy; both X<1> and X<2> are H, halogen or cyano; X<1> and X<2> need not be same). EXAMPLE:(+)-p-(4-Octyloxybenzyloxy)-alpha-methylbenzyl heptanoate. USE:Useful as a component, etc., of ferroelectric liquid crystal mixtures, having high compatibility with the many existing liquid crystal substances and capable of realizing a great Ps value in the resultant smectic phase especially when used as a component of a smectic liquid crystal mixture. The obtained optically active alcohol and optically active ester are useful as a raw material for medicines, agricultural chemicals, perfumes, etc. PREPARATION:A racemic alcohol expressed by formula II and a fatty acid ester of 2,2,2-trichloroethanol are reacted with an enzyme having esterase activity to convert only the (+)-isomer of the racemic alcohol into an ester compound, which is then separated from the (-)-isomer of the alcohol. Thereby, the compound expressed by formula I is obtained. |
