PURPOSE:To obtain a tape printer automatically determining an optimum printing character size in accordance with printing conditions, such as a width of a tape used as a printing medium and the number of lines of inputted characters. CONSTITUTION:A character size table 19 storing vertical dot numbers Tid and horizontal dot numbers Yid respectively corresponding to a plurality of character sizes Si is stored in a ROM 30 of a tape printer which can print many characters on a printing tape in two or more lines. The tape printer can detect a width of a printing tape 5 in a loaded tape containing cassette CS to calculate a vertical dot number from the detected tape width and a printing line number M. In addition, a printing length can be set in the tape printer, and the tape printer calculates a horizontal dot number from the set printing length and a maximum printing number N. A character size Si is determined by the operated result and the character size table 19. Printing of the obtained character size Si is conducted. |
