Abstract of the disclosure: A process for the continuous preparation of 3-cyano-3,5,5-trimethylcyclohexanone by base-catalyzed reaction of isophorone and hydrogen cyanide, comprises carrying out the reaction in two separate reaction zones a) with essentially complete back-mixing and subsequently b) essentially without back-mixing.
