The description relates to a device for writing or applying a liquid or a solid and comprises a body (12), the leading end of which has a point (32) for writing or applying which is arranged to move longitudinally in a cap (14). The cap (14) has a through aperture (36) for the point (32), and a sliding closure (16) for the through aperture (36) which can be closed by relative movement between the cap (14) and the body (12). The sliding closure (16) has a longitudinally movably guided strip (17) which is firmly coupled to the body (12) via a toothed device (18, 20, 22). This provides a reliable seal for the hollow space surrounding the point (32) with the point retracted. Printing problems arising in prior art writing devices through pressure differences resulting from the removal or fitting of the cap on the body are completely prevented.
