<p>PURPOSE:To eliminate the wasteage of power consumption by prohibiting any useless current-carrying to an energizing heating type catalyst according to a degree of deterioration in the catalyst. CONSTITUTION:Two energizing heating type catalysts 12a and 12b are set up in an engine exhaust passage, and current-energization takes place in time of engine starting, while secondary air is fed to an exhaust passage at the upstream of these catalysts from an air pump 17, thereby warming up each of them. An electronic control unit 30 detects a degree of deterioration in each catalyst, and in the case where the degree of their deterioration is small and starting is carried out by engine exhaust alone, even if a current is unenergized to these catalysts and they reach to an activating temperature, any current energization to these catalysts is prohibited in time of engine starting and only a secondary air supply from the air pump is carried out.</p> |
