PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a fluorophor treatment method capable of easily and efficiently removing an activator as a sulfide deposited on the surface of the fluorophor. SOLUTION: The objective fluorophor is obtained by the following process: powder of the general formula: MS (M is at least one element of Zn, Sr, Ca, Ba, Mg and Cd) is mixed with a compound of copper, silver or gold and a halogen compound; the mixture is baked at about 1,000-1,300 deg.C and ground, washed with distilled water, and dried; the thus dried powder is annealed at about 800 deg.C to obtain a fluorescent intermediate of the general formula: MS:R, X (R is at least one element of Cu, Ag and Au; and X is at least one element of Cl, Br, I); the thus obtained intermediate is added under agitation to an aqueous alcohol solution containing iodine and/or an iodine compound each having low toxicity and easy in waste liquid treatment; sulfide(s) deposited on at least the surface of the product is removed into the solution to effect washing the product; the solid resulted from a solid/liquid separation is washed, dried and classified, thus obtaining the objective fluorophor with high reflectance and emission luminance.
