LIQUID CRYSTAL COMPOUND AND LIQUID CRYSTAL DISPLAY DEVICE USING THE SAME

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal compound comprising a smectic liquid crystal compound used for a ferroelectric liquid crystal display device, an antiferroelectric liquid crystal display device, etc., and capable of decreasing brightness when the device displays black color. SOLUTION: This liquid crystal compound is expressed by the formula (1) (A is functional group composed of only C and H atoms and having a double bond, a triple bond or a ring; B is an alkyl or an alkoxyl; X is H or F; and Y is CH3 or CF3). Alkoxycarbonylphenyl phenylbenzoate structures expressed by the formulae (2) to (4) of which the each has a ring structure or a multiple bond and a branched structure made of trifluoromethyl are shown as concrete examples of the smectic liquid crystal compound to be used.
