The lamp has a burner (1) comprising a hollow space (2), in which gas is provided. Two electrodes (4, 5) extend into the space and an arc is formed between the electrodes in an operating condition of the lamp. An ignition aid electrode (6) is arranged in an area of the space as an electrically conducting layer on the exterior of the burner. The conducting layer is formed as a layer from transparent conducting oxide.
