The machine tool has a workpiece holder (3) which is rigidly connected to and supported by the output shaft (8) of the motor (5). On the other side the holder is connected to the side socket (2) mounted on the side of the machine bed (1) via a braking unit which transfers the braking moment to the holder. The motor is mounted in one of the two recesses (4) of the side sockets and rests with its motor housing (6) in the recess. The motor can be a direct drive and linear round motor which is free of any output gearing with its output shaft forming the rotor (8).
