Cash base units commonly have a lid or drawer opening mechanism which is operated by a solenoid. A point-of sale unit or cash register controls the firing of the solenoid. Different voltages may be used depending on the point-of sale unit. A cash base unit of the invention has a solenoid, an electrical connector between the solenoid and an external connector, and circuitry associated with the electrical connector which is capable of receiving a plurality of voltages and which adapts the received voltage to the operating voltage of the solenoid. The connector may be an RJ45 connector. The input voltages may be adapted by resistors on specific terminals of the connector.
