A hoist for an elevator, small in size and light in weight, having high rigidity, and providing excellent ride quality. More particularly, a hoist for an elevator, capable of being adapted for varied elevator shaft sizes by being combined with a deflection sheave in a machine room. An electric motor is installed next to a pillar section of a base body, a support section for rotatably supporting a rotating shaft of the motor is placed near the pillar section, and a drive sheave is provided outside the base body, on the opposite side of the electric motor, so as to be next to the pillar section. Further, a rotor fixed to one end of the rotating shaft and having a field magnet of the electric motor is placed outside the support section and fixed to the other end of the rotating shaft.
