A steam generator for a washing machine is provided to be designed compactly in width direction by vertically installing a heater, thereby miniaturizing the steam generator. A steam generator for a washing machine includes a heater(102), a lower case(104), and an upper case(106). The heater heats water to generate steam. A heater accommodating section in which a wide surface of the heater is vertically erected is formed in the lower case. The lower case accommodates the water for generating the steam. The upper case is engaged with an upper portion of the lower case to form a space. The heater accommodating section is formed by recessing a portion of the bottom surface of the lower case.
