A spindle device includes a rotatable first spindle (5, 32) to which a tool is fitted. The first spindle is accurately supported in a base by a static pressure air bearing. The spindle device further includes a second spindle (6, 33) rotatable around its axis generally aligned with the axis of the first spindle, a first connection means for connecting the base to the second spindle, and a second connection means for connecting the first spindle to the second spindle. The electrical connection between the base and the first spindle is made through the first and second connection means. The first connection means comprises, for example, a brush (15, 36). The second connection means having a mechanical degree of freedom comprises, for example, a flexible electric line (17, 39) or a helical spring (51).
