<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a transfer unit having an enhanced cleaning capability for a bending roller, while having a reduced size and cost, and to provide an image forming apparatus employing the transfer unit. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The transfer unit 10 is provided with: a loop type belt member 11 onto which a toner image is transferred from a photoreceptor 20; the bending roller 105 which contacts the surface of the belt member to bend the belt member to the inside of a loop and rotates with surface movement of the belt member; a transfer means which comprises a tensioning and laying roller 100 that exists upstream at least from the bending roller in a surface moving direction of the belt member and downstream from a spot where the toner image is transferred to the front surface of the belt member, in the surface moving direction of the belt member, and a surface moving member 5 facing the tensioning and laying roller 100 via the belt member; and a power supply 82 which applies the same bias to the transfer means and the bending roller simultaneously. A surface moving speed of the bending roller is equal to or higher than a surface moving speed of the surface moving member.
