Material differentiation with phase contrast imaging

A method and system to determine material composition of an object comprises capturing a series of digital radiographic images of the object using a single exposure energy level. An intensity of the captured images is determined as well as phase shift differences. A difference in material composition of the object may be determined based on a combination of the determined intensity and the modulated phase shifts of the captured images.

1. A method of determining material composition of an object, the method comprising:
capturing a series of digital radiographic images of the object using an x-ray beam; determining an intensity of the captured images of the object; determining a phase shift magnitude that occurred in the object using the captured images of the object; generating a differential phase shift image of the object; generating an integrated phase image of the object; determining a difference in material composition of the object based on a combination of the differential phase shift image and the integrated phase image; and generating and displaying a radiographic image of the object including separately displaying within the radiographic image of the object glandular and adipose tissue inside the object.
