PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an asymmetric diamine that is suitable for the production of soluble polyimide and to provide a process for producing the same.SOLUTION: The asymmetric diamine of formula (1) below in which A and B are amino groups is provided that is produced by reducing: a 3-aryl diphenyl ether compound represented by the formula (1) replaced with an arylazo group or a nitro group; or a 2-aryl diphenyl ether compound which is a regioisomer of the 3-aryl diphenyl ether compound.
