PURPOSE: To obtain a porous composite sheet for a porous carbon material, which is high in mechanical strength though lightweight and excellent in homogeneity, heat conductivity, gas permeability or the like. CONSTITUTION: Plural sheet-made bodies 1a-1c containing a fiber, capable of being converted into a carbon fiber, or a carbon fiber and a thermosetting resin such as phenol resin and different in fiber diameter or fiber content from each other are formed. A formed sheet 4 is formed by sandwiching by compression a laminated body, which is formed by laminating the plural sheet-made bodies 1a-1c in the order of the fiber diameter or the fiber content in the thickness direction, between belts 2a and 2b and press forming under heating while suppressing the hardening of the resin. In stead of the laminated body, a sheet-made body different continuously or stepwise in fiber diameter or fiber content in the thickness direction can be used. The porous composite sheet 6 is obtained by arranging the formed sheet 4 between metal molds 5a-5c, the faced surfaces of which are constituted of smooth surfaces, so as to form a clearance and heating at the temp. equal to or above the melt temp. of the resin to expand and harden. The porous carbon material increased in the average pore diameter continuously or stepwise in the thickness direction and having gas permeability is obtained by carbonizing or graphiting the porous composite sheet. |
