Disclosed is a separator for electrochemical devices which is composed of a porous membrane including a first separator layer and a second separator layer. The first separator layer mainly contains at least one resin selected from a resin A having a melting point of 80-130°C and a resin B which swells by absorbing a nonaqueous electrolyte solution when heated and the swelling degree of which increases as the temperature rises. The second separator layer mainly contains a filler having an upper temperature limit of not less than 150°C. At least one of the first separator layer and the second separator layer contains plate-like particles. By using such a separator for electrochemical devices, there can be obtained an electrochemical device having excellent safety at high temperatures.
