PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a cell wall modulation protein or polypeptide to be introduced to plants and for producing transgenic plants expressing altered structure or morphology, and to provide a nucleic acid encoding the protein or the polypeptide.

SOLUTION: There are provided an endo-1,4-β-glucanase gene isolated from Arabidopsis thaliana, a polypeptide corresponding to the gene, a nucleic acid molecule encoding the polypeptide, and a recombinant nucleic acid vector containing the nucleic acid molecule.
