PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a monocyclic liquid crystal compound negative in dielectric anisotropy and large in its absolute value, and to provide a liquid crystal composition and a display element containing the monocyclic liquid crystal compound. SOLUTION: A trifluoronaphthalene derivative expressed by general formula (1) and the liquid crystal composition containing the derivative and the display element using it are provided. In the formula, R<SP>1</SP>and R<SP>2</SP>express each an alkyl group or an alkenyl group, and A<SP>1</SP>and A<SP>2</SP>express each -CH=CH<SB>2</SB>, -OCH<SB>2</SB>-, -OCO-, or a single bond. This monocyclic liquid crystal compound is negative in dielectric anisotropy and large in its absolute value, low in viscosity, and the display element using it is useful as the constitution member of a liquid crystal composition for vertical alignment mode, IPS (in plane switching) mode and the like. Also, the liquid crystal composition is negative in dielectric anisotropy and large in its absolute value, and the display element using it is useful as a liquid crystal display element for a vertical orientation system, IPS and the like.
