PURPOSE:To extract object picture data in a short time by recording the picture data in a picture file in a data compressed form and selecting a function for successively displaying plural pictures at a speed substantially equal to a reading speed and a function for switching to a still display or to a next picture. CONSTITUTION:When an operator inputs a command for instructing the successive display of a retrieving picture from a keyboard 7, compressed data of a first picture is read to buffer memories 11, 12 is read from the file 3 based on an initial address on a table. While the compressed data of the first picture is extended and processed and displayed on a display 5, the compressed data of a second picture is read to another storing area on the buffer memory from the file 3. While the contents of one screen area are outputted to a display device, when an using area is switched so as to store the extended and processed picture data in other screen area, the successive display screen of the picture is obtained in a form for instantaneously switching from one picture to the next picture.
