<p>PURPOSE:To provide the liquid crystal element which has a high contrast between a bright state and a dark state and is high in display contrast at the time of multiplexing driving and with which a high-grade display is obtd. and unsightly residual images are not formed by provided oriented films consisting of specific polyimide. CONSTITUTION:Parallel substrates 11a and 11b are coated respectively with transparent electrodes 12a and 12b. Insulating films 13a and 13b and the oriented films 14a and 14b formed of the polyimide consisting of the repeating unit expressed by formula I are respectively laminated on the substrates 11a and 11b. A ferroelectric smectic liquid crystal 15 is disposed between the substrates 11a and 11b. In the formula I, R1 denotes a quadrivalent org. residue. X1 to X8 denote 1 to 15 alkyl group, 1 to 15C alkoxy group, CF3 halogen group or hydrogen atom. At least one of X1 to X4 are not the hydrogen atom and at least one of X5 to X8 are not the hydrogen atom.</p> |
